Chapter 6 – Gin

Luke called ahead on the communications device he left behind. He’d made progress on negotiating me safe passage to a volcano but there was a hitch. To gain the hymns trust I must meet with the leader of their free world, Oliver Maxwell, President of the United States of America.

“Okay,” I agreed. “I trust you. I will meet with him.”

“Thank you,” Luke sounded relieved. He ended the call without saying goodbye. I swallowed down the hurt rising in my gut and logged into our intelligence system. President Oliver Maxwell, in the eyes of the wider galaxy, is a good man. Tolerance and peace are important to him. Humanity was making progress.

I strolled to my closet. If one is to meet the leader of the free world one must look the part. Luke's gentle, polite knocking echoed through the control room. I straightened the crown resting on my head and raced to Aata and Kaito.

“Scan them,” I ordered.

“Of course, your Royal Highness,” Kaito bowed his head. An air of formality hung in the air, drowning out our usual friendly camaraderie. Aata, the youngest of us three sulked at the rear of the room, tugging on his stiff shirt collar.

“They’re unarmed, Your Highness.”

“Allow them entry.”

“Yes, Your Highness.”

The doors lifted. Luke stood at the side of President Oliver Maxwell. The pair made an odd couple. Luke was tall, proud and brave. His young skin glowed with health. The President walked with a stoop, cowed by age. His watery blue eyes scanned the ship. Luke didn’t do that when rolled onto our ship the first time. Luke’s tender brown eyes fixed on me and never moved once. Though, I was pointing a mobile x-ray machine at his head.

“Mr. President, welcome to The Haven, Anakim's first response rescue ship.” I extended my hand, a human custom we learned from our intelligence system. Luke's brow furrowed. His eyes zoomed in on my crown then dropped down my body, taking in my Royal dress. “I am Prince Gin of Anakim. This is Aata and Kaito, medics for our rescue squad.”

The corner of Luke’s lips twitched.

“Prince Gin, it is an honor,” the president said. “Do I need to bow or… what are your customs?”

“My people aren’t gifted respect by accident of birth, sir. We earn it. I’ve done nothing to earn your respect.”

“I see.”

“If you will follow me to my office, please?”

Luke trailed behind us, wringing his hands. I creaked open the office door. Luke took the seat opposite mine. The president stood, waiting for me to invite him to sit. His eyes roamed the walls, taking in the pictures of my home planet decorating the walls.

“Take a seat, sir.”

Once seated, the civility ended. His demands came thick and fast. NASA, their space agency, wanted to study our ship. Homeland Security wanted to study us. The FBI had questions about our surveillance capabilities.

“I will not share tech your people could use to create war and misery,” I said, crossing my arms. The silver-haired man pursed his lips.
